Throwing the Perfect BBQ: 5 Entertaining Tips

With summer fast approaching, it’s time to start planning the perfect backyard party for friends and family. Creating that perfect ambience and complementary menu is essential in hosting a tasteful and memorable party. Here are 5 things to consider to ensure your next party is one your friends and family will remember!

As the sun goes down in the evening, you want to make sure you have the right outdoor lighting to keep the party feeling warm and cozy, but most importantly that it doesn’t fizzle out. Hanging some patio lights across your backyard and even around your umbrella, really helps to create a comfortable ambience. Then you can add a couple candles and tiki torches to help keep your party sparkling all night long!

Whether you are making food for a group of 15 or for a small intimate gathering, you want to make sure you come up with the appropriate menu for all guests. In the case of smaller groups, you can afford to kick it up a notch on some nicer cuts of meat and begin with some nice appetizers like a charcuterie board or some delicious pates. For a larger group, it’s best to go with finger favourites, like burgers and hotdogs to avoid running over your budget (and avoid doing lots of dishes). BBQ’s are also great for all the incredible side dishes that complement the main course. I suggest making a couple salads (like potato, coleslaw, etc) as well as some beautifully grilled veggies (you can’t go wrong with corn on the cob or asparagus). These will be sure to leave your guests with happy, full belly’s at the end of the night! Whatever you serve one thing is for certain you will need to fire up the grill!

Since BBQs are a fun and more low key event, I like to allow my guests to serve themselves when it comes to drinks. It makes it more fun and easy going for everyone! By creating an outdoor bar with all the key liquors, mixers and bitters, it will allow your guests to create their very own personal favorites! It’s also good to store some cold beers on ice and have some bottles of wine out for more options. It is also important to consider those who don’t drink by supplying some pop and fresh juices- lemonade is always a hit!

What’s a party without music? This is almost just as important as the drinks. Make sure to bring some wireless speakers outside that you can plug your music into. Create a playlist that covers a range of different music to make sure everyone is happy with the playlist. As the night goes on you may just want to turn it up!

It is important to ensure your guests are entertained the entire length of the party. Often leaving out a couple outdoor games, like a bocce set will allow for everyone to play together and keep the party up beat and fun!
