TIFF comes and goes like a whirlwind. Unless you’re organized months in advance or you’re an experienced vet, it’s likely you may miss the advance ticket sales. Even then, you need to be one of the lucky ones to get into all the movies of your choice. Not to worry, not all hope is lost! You can still catch some great films by trying for tickets the day of the screening; however, if you are going to go down this path, there are a few things you should know.
The lines can get pretty long, especially if you are trying to rush a popular screening. Tickets are distributed on a first-come first-served basis, so make the commitment to come early. Keep in mind that you may hold a place in line for one other person, so lines may in fact be longer than they look. May the odds ever be in your favour!
Rush lines only accept cash so make sure to bring more than you planned on spending – we’d hate for you to get to the front of the line only to be turned away for being a few dollars short!
Prepare For The Elements
Although September can be a lovely time of year, Toronto weather can be unpredictable. Rush lines are an outdoor affair, so keep an eye on the weather and come prepared accordingly. You may want a sweater, light jacket, or umbrella on hand while you wait.
Bring A Snack
As mentioned the lines tend to get long and the earlier you come the better your chances are for scoring tickets. Having said this, you may be there for a while so bring a snack! Don’t forget that once you have your tickets in hand you will likely be ushered into the screening right away leaving no time for food. Grab a wrap!
Keep A Full Charge
Now that you know how to put yourself in the best position to get the tickets you want via rush line, all that’s left to do is wait – and wait you will! Luckily, nearly everyone these days has a smartphone filled with all the tools you need to stay occupied while waiting in line. Read up on the most anticipated TIFF films, get updates from Twitter on TIFF events and celebrity sightings, or treat yourself to a little online shopping!
**bonus tip: if your smartphone battery dies as quickly as everyone else’s, bring a portable charger to ensure you aren’t stuck in line with nothing to do!
Enjoy the show!
