Buying Guides: Washers and Dryers

It’s not too often one is in the market for a new washer or dryer, so making sure you are in-the -know and up to date with the current features and options is necessary to ensuring you pick the ideal one for your needs and preferences.

There are three main types of clothing washers. You have a choice of three types: the traditional top-loaders, high-efficiency top-loaders or high-efficiency front-loaders. As described, each type of washer has its benefits and disadvantages.

The Traditional Top-Load Washer:

This type of conventional top-loader washer features a top mounted door that provides access to a center-post agitator. The tub fills to a selected water level while the central agitator spins laundry in a back and forth motion throughout the washing cycle.

In contrast to a washer machine, dryers offer a more basic configuration with similar features. All dryers use electric motors to tumble laundry and fan heated air.

However, the primary difference between clothing dryers is the source of heat generation; with the option of going with electric or natural gas dryer.

The main determinant of your purchase decision depends on whether there is a gas line hook up to connect your dryer. In regards to options and features, there are two primary types of dryers.

Full Size Dryers:

The typical full-sized dryer width ranges from approximately 27-32 inches in width.  There is no standard definition of what constitutes capacity with regards to model size, thus it is important to remember that manufacturers often describe the capacity size with superlatives such as extra large and super-plus as descriptors.

However, most full-sized dryers can wash a load ranging from approximately 6 to 9 cubic feet. Full-sized dryers are available in front loading and top loading designs.

For a narrow space, a laundry center will combine a stacked design of a washer and dryer unit. These dryer choices are a practical choice for apartment dwellers and singles.
